Division 3 – Ensembles

Please be sure to read all the rules and regulations at the beginning of the syllabus. Also note the following:

- Conductors should be prepared to announce the title and composer of their selected pieces.
- Memorization is not required and no marks will be deducted if the music is used.
- Participation is limited to amateur ensembles only.
- Each ensemble should contain no fewer than six players, unless otherwise noted. (Please indicate the approximate number of players in the ensemble or band on the entry form.)
- The time limit for each performing group is ten minutes of music.
- A copy of the complete original score must be given to the session secretary for the adjudicator’s use. The first bar of each line of the score should be numbered.
- According to Federal Law, it is illegal to copy documents which are copyrighted without first obtaining permission from the copyright owner. No photocopies will be accepted by a Festival representative unless there is accompanying documentation indicating permission to photocopy was granted by the copyright holder.
- Music that has been downloaded from the Internet must include a confirmation to indicate that it has been legally downloaded.
- A certificate will be present to each single participant or participating group. Unless otherwise indicated under the class heading in the syllabus, standings will be awarded on the certificates according to the following scale of marks:
GOLD – a mark of 85 or higher
SILVER – a mark of 80 to 84
BRONZE – a mark of 75 to 79
PARTICIPANT- mark of 74 or lower- Workshop classes consist of a 15-minute session with the adjudicator. Workshops are only open to groups who have entered at least one other Community Ensembles class in our 2019 Festival.
- Any participant may request adjudication only. Please indicate this preference by checking the appropriate box (A/O) on the entry form. A certificate of participation and comments from the adjudicator will be given but no mark or standing will be noted.
- The adjudicators may award trophies at their discretion and these awards will be given out at the Festival Encores concert in May.
- The adjudicator may recommend one ensemble or band to represent the Orillia Festival at the Ontario Provincial Music Festival. For more information regarding the criteria for possible recommendation, visit the Ontario Music Festivals Association website: www.omfa.info
The Test Piece in all of the following classes will be the participating group’s “Own Choice”.
COMMUNITY ENSEMBLES – Instrumental
The following classes are open to Woodwinds (including Recorder), Brass, Percussion, Strings (including Harp, Ukulele, Guitar).
Instrumental Chamber Groups – 2 to 5 players
Perform a selection of your own choosing.
Duets/Duos
Trios
Quartets/Quintets
Instrumental Small Ensemble – 6 to 20 players
Perform two musically contrasting selections of your own choosing.
Family Ensembles
Perform one or two selections of your own choosing. Selections do NOT need to be memorized. All players from the same immediate family. Mixed-age classes are for adults and children. Please indicate instruments on your entry form. Any combination of woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings, piano, voice may be used.
Participants in this class will receive Certificates of Participation. Neither marks nor standings will be given.
World Music
Participants will perform traditional music of any culture that was originally created and played by indigenous musicians or that is closely guided by indigenous music of the regions of its origin.
Note: World Music does NOT include western popular music or western art music (i.e. European classical music).
Instrumental Workshop – Chamber Groups and Small Ensembles
Participants will receive a 15-minute workshop with the adjudicator.
Instrumental Large Ensembles (21 or more players)
Perform two musically contrasting selections of your own choosing.
Instrumental Workshop –Large Ensembles (21 or more players)
Participants will receive a 15-minute workshop with the adjudicator.
COMMUNITY ENSEMBLES – VOCAL
Vocal Chamber Groups – 2 to 5 singers
The performance piece in all of the following classes will be the participant’s own choice of traditional repertoire.
DUET
Participants in these classes are to sing in two-part harmony.
TRIO
Participants in these classes are to sing in two- or three-part harmony.
QUARTET/QUINTET
Participants in these classes are to sing in four- or five-part harmony.
Vocal Youth and Children’s Small Ensembles – 6 to 20 singers
Perform two contrasting unison or unison with descant selections.
Perform two contrasting selections, one of which must be in two or more parts.
Perform two contrasting selections, one of which must be in three or more parts for unchanged voices.
Perform two contrasting selections, one of which must be in three or more parts for SA(T)B voices.
Vocal Youth and Children’s Large Ensembles – 21 singers or more
Perform two contrasting selections, one of which must be in three or more parts for SA(T)B voices.
Perform two contrasting sacred selections.
Perform two contrasting sacred selections.
Adult Choirs
Perform two contrasting selections, one of which must be in three or more parts.
Perform two contrasting selections, one of which must be in three or more parts
Perform two contrasting selections, one of which must be in three or more parts.
