Please be sure to read all the rules and regulations and note the following:
- For classes where age limits are specified, participants must be of the prescribed age on the first day of January in the current year of the Festival. All participants must state their age on the entry form.
- In all classes in which the performance piece is to be the participant’s “Own Choice”, the selection chosen must not be a work for which the participant has received a Gold standing at any previous Orillia Kiwanis Music Festival.
- All “Own Choice” Conservatory pieces must be taken from the current syllabus of either the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) or Conservatory Canada (CC) unless otherwise indicated.
- Solo pieces are to be performed by memory. The adjudicator is advised to deduct five marks if a participant uses their music. However, memorization is not required and no marks will be deducted for the following classes: Quick Study, Oratorio, and ensemble classes of two or more. Please note that memorization is not required during a virtual music festival.
- The music for each participant’s “Own Choice” selection will be collected by a Festival representative at the start of the class for use by the adjudicator. Please ensure that bar numbers are indicated on the score.
- According to Federal Law, it is illegal to copy documents which are copyrighted without first obtaining permission from the copyright owner. No photocopies will be accepted by a Festival representative unless there is accompanying documentation indicating permission to photocopy was granted by the copyright holder.
- Music that has been downloaded from the Internet must include a confirmation to indicate that it has been legally downloaded.
- Participants are not allowed to rehearse in any Festival location at any time during the Festival; however all efforts will be made to provide appropriate warm up rooms at the Festival location.
- Participants will receive a signal from the adjudicator to begin, after which they will be expected to announce the title and composer of their “own choice” piece before its performance.
- A chord may be given on the piano at the commencement of any a capella music.
- No pre-recorded accompaniments may be used in this division unless specified under the class heading.
- A certificate will be present to each single participant or participating group. Unless otherwise indicated under the class heading in the syllabus, standings will be awarded on the certificates according to the following scale of marks:
GOLD – a mark of 85 or higher
SILVER – a mark of 80 to 84
BRONZE – a mark of 75 to 79
PARTICIPANT- mark of 74 or lower - Any participant may request adjudication only. Please indicate this preference by checking the appropriate box (A/O) on the entry form. A certificate of participation and comments from the adjudicator will be given but no mark or standing will be noted.
- The adjudicators may award trophies at their discretion and these awards will be given out at the Festival Encores concert in May.
- The adjudicator may recommend one senior vocal participant at the Associate level and one participant at each of the grades six, seven, eight, nine and ten Conservatory levels to represent the Orillia Kiwanis Music Festival at the Ontario Provincials. CONSERVATORY & CLASSICAL VOCAL REPERTOIRE CLASSES
Note: RCM = Royal Conservatory of Music
CC = Conservatory Canada
CONSERVATORY – VOCAL SOLO – LEVELS PREPARATORY OR CC EQUIVALENT TO DIPLOMA
Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” piece from the current RCM or CC Classical Voice syllabus at their current level of study.
**Participants in the Preparatory classes or CC equivalent will be awarded Certificates of Participation. Neither marks nor standings will be given.
CONSERVATORY VOCAL SOLO – VOCALISES
Each participant is to choose ONE Vocalise from the current RCM Vocalise Books, CC equivalent or Levels 7 to 10 at their current level of study using all six vowels as required for exams (RCM-a,e,i,o,u, and y; CC -(IPA):ee[i], ay[e],ah[a], h[o], oo[u]).
The purpose of this class is to provide feedback for those preparing for exams and/or to improve the singer’s skill in performing vocalises which are so important for overall technical development.
CONSERVATORY – VOCAL SOLO CONCERT REPERTOIRE
Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” piece of any suitable concert repertoire from the current RCM or CC Classical Voice syllabus at the appropriate age level.
**Participants in the 8 years & under class will be awarded Certificates of Participation. Neither marks nor standings will be given.
CONSERVATORY – VOCAL SOLO FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” piece that is listed in the current RCM or CC Classical Voice syllabus and is written in a language other than English.
CONSERVATORY – VOCAL SOLO SACRED
Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” sacred piece that is listed in the current RCM or CC Classical Voice syllabus.
CONSERVATORY – VOCAL SOLO TRADITIONAL FOLK
Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” traditional folk song in any language, that is listed in the current RCM or CC Classical Voice syllabus.
CONSERVATORY – VOCAL SOLO SPIRITUAL OR GOSPEL SONG
Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” African- American Spiritual or Gospel song in any language, that is listed in the current RCM or CC Classical Voice syllabus.
CONSERVATORY – VOCAL SOLO CANADIAN COMPOSER
Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” piece originally written by a Canadian composer. Selections may be chosen from the current RCM or CC Classical Voice or Contemporary Idioms Vocal syllabi, Alliance for Canadian New Music Project, Canadian Contemporary Showcase Syllabus, or any suitable piece originally composed by a Canadian Composer.
VOCAL SOLO – CONTEMPORARY COMPOSERS
Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” piece from a contemporary composer from the current RCM or CC Classical Voice or Contemporary Idioms Vocal syllabi at the appropriate age level.
**Participants in the 8 years & under class will be awarded Certificates of Participation. Neither marks nor standings will be given. For Musical Theatre and Movies, please enter under the Popular Repertoire category.
VOCAL SOLO CONCERT SONG
Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” concert song from the standard vocal repertoire such as is listed in the current RCM or CC Classical Voice syllabus. For example, an English Art Song, German Lieder, Italian Art Song, or French Art Song. NOT From Oratorio or Opera.
VOCAL SOLO – CHURCH MUSIC
Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” traditional church hymn in classical style or a contemporary church solo. Repertoire should not to be taken from an Oratorio, Cantata or Motet.
VOCAL SOLO – ORATORIO
Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” Oratorio aria. Must be sung in the original key and language. Memorization is NOT required and no marks will be deducted if the music is used. The adjudicator’s overall assessment may be based on how well the participant handles performing with music in hand.
VOCAL SOLO – OPERATIC ARIA
Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” Operatic aria. Must be sung in the original key and language. The accompanying recitative may also be sung but is not required.
VOCAL SOLO – OPERETTA
Each participant or ensemble is to perform an “Own Choice” Operetta aria (for example, those by Gilbert & Sullivan, Lehar, Strauss, Herbert, etc.) May be sung in English.
CONSERVATORY – VOCAL SOLO CONCERT GROUP
Each participant is to present a mini recital of two or three contrasting “Own Choice” selections of standard concert repertoire from the current RCM or CC Classical Voice syllabus. The performance will be assessed on the choice of repertoire and the variety in content with regard to period, style, key, etc., as well as on technique and overall stage presence. The pieces sung in this class may NOT be performed in another class in the vocal division.

CONSERVATORY VOCAL SOLO – MASTER CLASS
Each participant will be given a mini lesson by the adjudicator on a piece of “Own Choice” repertoire. Neither marks nor standings will be given in these classes.

CONSERVATORY VOCAL SOLO – BEGINNER YOUNG ADULT & MATURE SINGERS
This class is open to adult beginners, any voice. Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” piece from standard vocal repertoire as listed in the current RCM or CC Classical Voice syllabus.
SMALL ENSEMBLE CLASSES
The performance piece in all of the following classes will be the participant’s “Own Choice” of traditional repertoire. Memorization is NOT required nor will marks be deducted if music is used.

VOCAL DUET
Each ensemble is to perform an “Own Choice” selection from traditional repertoire. Participants in these classes are to sing in two-part harmony.
VOCAL TRIO
Each ensemble is to perform an “Own Choice” selection from traditional repertoire. Participants in these classes are to sing in two- or three-part harmony.
VOCAL QUARTET/QUINTET
Each ensemble is to perform an “Own Choice” selection from traditional repertoire. Participants in these classes are to sing four- or five-part harmony.
VOCAL FAMILY ENSEMBLE
Each ensemble is to perform an “Own Choice” selection. Any combination of voice, instrument and age is acceptable. All participating members must be from the same immediate family. Accompanist may be other than a family member. Participants in this class will receive Certificates of Participation. Neither marks nor standings will be given.
VOCAL TEACHER & STUDENT DUET
Each ensemble is to perform an “Own Choice” selection from traditional repertoire, any voice. Duet is performed with the teacher but only the student will receive an adjudication. For Musical Theatre and Movies, please enter under the Popular Repertoire category.

POPULAR REPERTOIRE
MUSICAL THEATRE & MOVIES – SOLOS

The use of props and costumes is NOT required, but may be considered in the adjudicator’s assessment. **Participants in the 8 years & under will be awarded Certificates of Participation. Neither marks nor standings will be given.
MUSICAL THEATRE & MOVIES – CONCERT GROUP
Each participant is to present a mini recital of two or three contrasting “Own Choice” selections from musical theatre or movies. SOLO – POP, ROCK & RAP
Perform an “Own Choice” piece arranged or originally written for voice in the pop, rock, or rap idiom at the appropriate age and level. Pieces must be performed from memory. A notated copy of the piece must be supplied to the adjudicator at the beginning of the class.
SOLO – JAZZ & BLUES
Perform an “Own Choice” piece arranged or originally written for voice in the jazz or blues idiom at the appropriate age and level. Pieces must be performed from memory. A notated copy of the piece must be supplied to the adjudicator at the beginning of the class.
VOCAL SOLO WITH SELF ACCOMPANIMENT
Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” vocal solo in any style of repertoire while also self-accompanying on any single instrument. A second person may NOT assist with the accompaniment.
VOCAL SOLO – CONTEMPORARY COMPOSERS
Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” song from a contemporary composer of popular music.
POPULAR VOCAL SOLO – BEGINNER YOUNG ADULT & MATURE SINGERS
This class is open to adult beginners, any voice. Each participant is to perform an “Own Choice” piece from any style of popular music.
SINGER/SONGWRITER – ORIGINAL COMPOSITION
Each participant is to perform an original song of their own composition in any style for any voice. Piano or other instrumental accompaniment is permitted (e.g., guitar, ukulele etc.) The participant must submit to the Composition Division Coordinator a complete notated copy of the composition 48 hours in advance of the scheduled performance. The score must be signed by the student composer. (See Composition Division).
